New Home

Hi all,

I have decided to custom design a new blog. Please visit me at www.livingportlandblog.com

Hope to see you there!

The Virtual Knife

There has been quite a bit of controversy lately around how Photoshop is being used to alter the personalities on covers of magazines and in advertising. Accused edits include enhanced breasts, small waists and hips, lighter skin, etc. This most recently came to a head with Gabourey Sidibe, star of Precious, and this month’s cover of Elle.

Gaby’s case is definitely not extreme – and it may not be true – but the cover has definitely sparked a much need discussion around ethics.

Take a look and be the judge yourself.

I don’t even need to point anything out, do I?

Zara

I stumbled across Zara on another blog and I have to post some of my favorite looks I found on its website. Too darling!

Kids these days..

I’m horrified that these kid’s parents let them do these reenactments. However, I do watch reality TV and these videos are HILARIOUS and spot on. I love Scott from the Kardashian episode, and Jwow from Jersey Shore. Brilliant.

NYC Fashion Week

Fashion Week kicks off today in New York City, where an anticipated crowd of more than 230,000 will preview Spring and Summer 2011 collections from the likes of Isaac Mizrahi, Vera Wang, and newcomer Christian Siriano among many talented others. The twice-a-year trade shows generates more than $770 million in economic activity in NYC, according to IMG Fashion. That’s a lot of Jimmy Choo shoes and Louis Vuitton purses!

Heads Up

How cute are these Heads Up milk glasses? I need!

And how about these fun trash bags, designed by Portland’s own Wieden and Kennedy?

Or if you’re in the market for some Elephant wallpaper..

Save me. It’s too much. I’m getting off this website now…

The Fashion Bible

It’s that time of year again. The time when all fashion magazines come out with its September issues, just in time for NY Fall Fashion Week. You know, the ones that weigh 10 pounds and are full of ads? The mecca of them all is VOGUE, its September issue coveted ‘The Bible of the fashion world.” Halle Berry landed the cover this year and she looks GORGEOUS. I’m a big fan of VOGUE because they staff incredible photographers and writers. The magazine is best known for editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who was potrayed by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada but, more recently, plays herself in VOGUE’s documentary The September Issue.

I won’t be able to afford anything but I can’t wait to dive in.

Menu Monday

Sometimes I wonder why I’m not a housewife right now. I’ve always loved cooking, cleaning and laundry. It’s true! For my 18th birthday, my girlfriends bought me laundry supplies. Though, that was half a joke gift. But still. One thing I have to do each weekend is make a meal plan for the week. Because I’m just cooking for myself, it can be tempting to just grab take out or swing through the drive through. I have no one else to worry about!

  • Monday: Spinach and olive oil pasta with grilled chicken
  • Tuesday: Leftover pasta and grilled chicken.
  • Wednesday: Weekly dinner with the parents. Menu TBD.
  • Thursday: Spaghetti with steamed broccoli
  • Friday: Hospital grub

Note that I try not to attempt anything fancy during the week. I don’t have the time, nor the patience! : )

Cheers,

Jessica

Decorating for the Cube Dweller – Part 2

DO give yourself some visual breaks.

If you’re like the majority of cube dwellers, you probably spend more time in your cube than in your own bedroom. So it makes sense to put up some visuals that reflect your personality. Put up some (tasteful) photos of family and friends, some small posters, etc. I’m not really one to like the cheesy motivational posters but whatever floats your boat. Having something to look at, other than your computer screen, will help keep you sane. If you’re feeling extra creative, head over to cafepress.com/fauxwindow and pick out an artificial window like the one below. Too fun!

DON’T display inappropriate pictures.

Please leave the spring break photos at home. No one should see a photo of you in a bikini with a beer bong in your hand. This rule also applies to calendars. Keep the Playboy calendar at home and stick to showing off the other kind of kittens.

DON’T be a mess.

Keep your space nice and tidy. You never know who’s going to come around for a visit. You wouldn’t want a senior executive stopping by and seeing your cans of sodas, used tissues and Tupperware containers stacked up, would you? Desk accessories are a great way of staying organized and offer a way to spruce up your cube. Accessories can be found on the cheap at Target or Ross.

 Cheers!

Decorating for the Cube Dweller – Part 1

Decorating for the Cube Dweller – Part 1

Interior design is something I love to take on. But cubicle design? Where do you start?

If you looked around my corner of the office, you’d notice that my co-workers are a bit extreme when it comes to this. I’m not going to expose anyone’s personal space on here but you can get an idea of our colorfulness from how one of our walls is decked out. One of many reasons I love my teammates. See?

But my desk is just a little blah. See?

Here’s a better view…

I have a few odds and ends, but otherwise it’s not very inspiring. And I work for a creative agency, dangit! Edward and Mona up there agree.

What should I do with my space? My second post in this mini-series will continue soon, discussing the do’s and don’t of cube decorating.

DON’T: Put up photos of yourself wearing a string bikini.

Cheers!
